Black Friday is fast approaching and it’s time to do your Black Friday prep to ensure that you’re ready to maximise your sales at the busiest time of the year.
For all businesses, both large and small, at the top of your Black Friday prep list should be to ensure that you have assigned unique identification numbers to your products in the form of Global Trade Item Number (GTIN). GTINs allow you to unlock all relevant product information to your items, allowing you to successfully list and sell your product, barcode your stock, leverage search engines, manage inventory and even monitor customer satisfaction.
Many marketplaces will insist on a GTIN, but for those that don’t, and on your own website, it’s what will unlock the door to search rankings (e.g. on Google Shopping and Shopify) and ensure that consumers find your listings.
The GTIN uniquely connects every product to its product data across the globe, as well as linking it to a unique brand, allowing retailers and marketplaces to efficiently categorise and list items on their platforms. This technology is what enables a multi-billion-dollar global supply chain and helps move products around the world and across borders. There’s little point discounting and having the best price on the planet if consumers don’t find your listing!
“GS1 standards and identifiers are incredibly important for OnBuy sellers because we operate a catalogue system. We chose to operate a catalogue system as this is ultimately more beneficial to our buyers, and easier to manage for our sellers. We advise that sellers license their barcodes directly from GS1.”

“Having correct and authentic GTINs for your products is a requirement on Fruugo and should be a given for any online seller. GS1 is our go-to partner for sellers that need GTINs.”
