Social Media Events in September 2020

There are lots of events throughout September 2020 for you to get involved with as both a company and an individual, creating social media content which can increase your followers, promote your brand and product lines, show support for charities and good causes and encourage interaction with potential customers. Although many parts of the UK are affected by coronavirus guidelines, many events are still being held – either entirely online or with social distancing measures in place to protect all those who attend.

In this – the ninth blog post in the series – I’ll be detailing each event that will be trending on social media to give you a heads up and allow you to plan and create content for your own social media channels so you can get involved by using the relevant hashtags, promote yourself and ultimately, your online shop.

Whether you just have a single channel – such as a Facebook Page – or a number of them (Facebook Pages, Twitter and Instagram are the three most commonly used), the suggestions in these posts will inspire you to create content that ensures that you have good quality posts trending with popular subjects. If you choose to automate your social media – you can read about this more here – you won’t even need to update every day! Simply upload and schedule your updates and publish them automatically, leaving you more time to concentrate on managing your online shop.

The Event: National Organic Month/Organic September
Date: All month
What you could do for a Business Post: The official website for this event is packed full of useful research and links to the official social media accounts to follow. Essentially, National Organic Month is all about raising awareness of the benefits of eating organically, so if your online shop sell products that can help with this – such as cooking accessories and crockery (especially if it’s made from recycled materials) – then this would be an ideal time to promote those products in your social media posts.
What you could do for a Personal Post: If you already buy organic foods, share photos of it and any recipes you make to encourage your followers to give organic food a try.

The Event: Classical Music Month
Date: All month
What you could do for a Business Post: If your online shop retails classical music, instruments or merchandise, this is the time for you to shine as you can promote your products for the duration of this month.
What you could do for a Personal Post: Classical music isn’t as popular as it once was, but there’s plenty of pieces of classical music that everyone recognises from television and music. For example, Dvorak’s Symphony Number 9 is better known as the Hovis bread TV advert. You could research a handful of tracks and link this to your social media so you can ask your followers which film or TV show they’re from.

The Event: International Day of Charity
Date: 5th September
What you could do for a Business Post: You can read about this event on the UN’s official website, but the main essence of it is to raise awareness of charity and charitable events. If you have a physical shop as well as trading online, do you support any charities by having a collection tin on the premises, or perhaps you have taken part in a charity event recently where you have photos that you can use to demonstrate that your company supports a charitable cause? If not, then select a charity that you wish to support as a company and make a donation. You could even make a post about why you have selected this specific charity and link them in it.
What you could do for a Personal Post: If you support any charities personally, either by attending or running events or just by donating from your wage regularly, let your followers know who they are, why you chose to support them and tag them in the post where possible.

The Event: National Read A Book Day
Date: 6th September
What you could do for a Business Post: If your online shop sells books, then you need to start promoting this event about a week beforehand, showcasing your best sellers and any offers you’ve implemented. If you don’t sell books but instead sell book accessories, such as bookmarks, book chairs and book covers, you need to promote these items too.
What you could do for a Personal Post: If you’re reading a book at the moment, share with your followers what it is, and ask them to list their top 3 favourite books of all time. Alternatively, if you’re not a big reader, list the favourite book you have to read from school – especially if the book was a classic and is still in print today.

The Event: Organ Donation Week
Date: 7th-13th September
What you could do for a Business Post: The official website for this event is full of lots of resources that you can share with your followers on social media. Also if your online shop sells medical accessories, such as identification bracelets which identify someone as a blood or organ donor, get these products promoted for the duration of the week too and encourage your followers to get involved and sign up to become donors themselves.
What you could do for a Personal Post: If you are already a blood or organ donor and you have photos of you in the process of donating, then share these on social media. Alternatively, sign up yourself and share how easy the process is and what your reasons are to make a personal post for your social media followers.

The Event: Roald Dahl Day
Date: 13th September
What you could do for a Business Post: If you sell books, and in particular, titles by Roald Dahl, you need to promote these both prior to the day and during the event itself. The official website provides lots of inspiration for different ways to celebrate the day.
What you could do for a Personal Post: What’s your favourite Roald Dahl book? There’s many to choose from and not all of them a strictly considered children’s titles, such as Boy and Solo. Share your favourites on your social media and ask your followers what their favourites are.

The Event: Jeans for Genes Day
Date: 14th-20th September
What you could do for a Business Post: If you sell jeans and denim products, you should promote these for the duration of the week, as well as making a donation. As a business, and especially if you have staff, you can raise money for this event by downloading the relevant resources from the official website. Encourage your staff to wear jeans on the day for a small donation and you could even offer a prize for the individual who takes double denim to the next degree!
What you could do for a Personal Post: Make a donation and wear double denim for the day. Take a full-length selfie of your outfit each day and share them with your followers every morning to encourage them to take part and donate.

The Event: World Guacamole Day
Date: 16th September
What you could do for a Business Post: If your online shop sells cooking implements, cookbooks, or even better – some of the ingredients for a gorgeous guac, then get these items promoted on your social media during the day itself.
What you could do for a Personal Post: Share with your followers your own guacamole recipe and if you can, make a video of it being made. Alternatively, if you’ve never tried any of this delicious green sauce, purchase some from a supermarket and video yourself trying some for the first time to share with your followers.

The Event: Great British Beach Clean
Date: 18th-25th September
What you could do for a Business Post: The official website lists all of the events that have been organised around the country for the Great British Beach Clean, so it may be worth getting involved with one of those as a business, and if you can afford the time and the products (especially if you sell buckets, shovels and other similar items), turn up yourself in branded gear and help out the other volunteers. Take lots of before and after photos and make sure you update your social media followers throughout the day.
What you could do for a Personal Post: If you live close enough to a beach but an event has not been organised, you could clear up that beach yourself or alternatively, choose a piece of public land that could also do with a clean and use that instead. You could set your smartphone to video the entire process and speed up the footage several times to make a timelapse video you can share with your followers.

The Event: International Talk Like A Pirate Day
Date: 19th September
What you could do for a Business Post: Celebrated since 1995, this parody event is worth getting involved with if your online shop sells anything vaguely pirate-related, such as fancy dress costumes and accessories. As this day falls on a Friday, it might be worth promoting the costumes a little earlier, presuming that some folk may be attending pirate-themed parties that weekend.
What you could do for a Personal Post: You could take a selfie with a pirate filter on it – or as close as you can find – to wish your followers a happy International Talk Like A Pirate Day, and respond to all comments on your posts with lots of ‘Arrrr’s and ‘matey’.

The Event: International Week of Happiness at Work
Date: 21st-27th September
What you could do for a Business Post: There is an official website for this event, where you can sign a manifesto to contribute to making happiness at work a regular occurrence. For your posts, take photos of your staff being happy at work and as a company, share what you do to keep them so.
What you could do for a Personal Post: What was your best day at work ever? Share the story with your followers, ideally with photo or video evidence on it if you have it. Ask them to share their stories with you.

The Event: National Recycling Week
Date: 21st-27th September
What you could do for a Business Post: The aim of this event is to encourage and raise awareness of recycling. If your online shop sells products which help customers with this – such as bins, bin liners, can crushers and so on, promote these items. Alternatively, if you carry product lines made from entirely recycled materials, promote these items too – both before the event and during the week itself.
What you could do for a Personal Post: How much do you recycle as an individual? The website linked above is full of information about what can be recycled and what can’t – so why not have a read and create a new recycling plan for yourself as an individual to share with your followers and encourage them to do the same.

The Event: World Car Free Day
Date: 22nd September
What you could do for a Business Post: For this event, we’re all encouraged to give our vehicles up for the day to raise awareness of how they are damaging the planet. If your online shop sells alternatives, such as bicycles, scooters and similar, promote these product lines before and during the event itself to take part.
What you could do for a Personal Post: If you have a car, retire it for the day and find a healthy alternative such as a bike or public transport so you can post about the experience to your followers. If you don’t own a vehicle, you could instead post about how you cope quite easily without one and what resources are available in your locality.

The Event: World’s Biggest Coffee Morning (MacMillan)
Date: 25th September
What you could do for a Business Post: Created to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support, this event gains momentum every single year, which is fantastic. Visit the official website to learn how you can take part as an individual or as a business; the latter is important if you have a physical shop as holding an event within your shop will raise money, increase footfall and provide you with lots of photo opportunities too.
What you could do for a Personal Post: If you can, attend one of the coffee mornings held in your locality and make sure you get a slice of cake for a photo opportunity. Alternatively, if you have the skills, make contact with a company or community group holding a coffee morning beforehand and bake a cake for them to sell at the event.

The Event: National Doodle Day
Date: 25th September
What you could do for a Business Post: Created by Epilepsy Action, National Doodle Day aims to raise awareness of epilepsy and raise money for the charity too. Celebrities take part in this event by providing their doodles on the official website which can be bought via auction with all proceeds being donated to Epilepsy Action. If your online shop sells items used for doodling – pads, pens, etc. – then promote these items and the event on your posts on social media – it wouldn’t hurt to make a donation too!
What you could do for a Personal Post: If you can afford to make a donation, do so, and if you doodle, share your most recent effort with your followers. There’s a really good page on the website which reveals what kind of doodles mean what, so you could test yourself and see if anything is revealed, before sharing your results with your followers.

Next month, we’ll be publishing a list of events that are due to run during October 2020 so you can plan ahead for that month too – be sure to subscribe to our blog so you get a notification of when the next month of our Social Media Calendar is published.
