How to create your own logo for your online shop

Having a logo is an integral part of setting up your own online shop. Your logo is part of your brand and identifies you. It’s something that people should be able to instantly recognise. Think of Apple, Nike or Cadbury’s – their brand identity is so strong you could guess who made something by the branding on the product. That is how impactful a good logo and brand can be.

In this blog, we’re going to be looking at a few different ways you can create a logo that reflects the branding you’re trying to achieve and fits within your budget.

DIY

One of the most cost-effective ways of this is by creating a logo yourself. If you have some design knowledge and a programme like Adobe Illustrator you can turn your ideas into tangible options for your logo and narrow down your choice from there. There are however a few guidelines when it comes to creating your own logo if you haven’t done so before.

1. Make sure to sketch out as many ideas as possible into a pad. These initial ideas and sketches are arguably the most important part of the process. Keep in mind that the logo’s you sketch need to be legible at a range of sizes and look good in black and white.

2. Keep the design of your logo as simple as possible. Simple logos create more impact and are more memorable than cluttered badly designed logos.

3. Whatever your design, it must represent the company and therefore must reflect the company’s values and positioning within its market. This also extends to typeface as an elegant one will be associated with businesses such as high-end restaurants rather than a children’s nursery for example.

4. The ultimate goal is to make your logo recognisable. You want people to be able to recall the name of your business after only seeing the logo for a moment.

Just remember that the most recognisable logos in the world are simple and you should try to do that with your logo too. Once you’ve got a few sketches, mock them up in Illustrator and make sure to play around with them so you have a few options in front of you. It’s also a good idea to get some feedback on a few of your mockups, from friends, family and customers or even people on the street. Feedback can be invaluable and fresh eyes might spot something you didn’t initially.

Logo Builder

If however, you don’t feel confident to design your own logo from scratch or you don’t have the software, there are tools out there to help you create your own simple logo. EKM’s logo builder is just one of them and is exclusive to EKM customers. It allows you to include your company name and tagline as well as an icon and colours of your choice.

However, if you aren’t currently an EKM customer but you’re still looking for a logo builder, there are hundreds around for you to use and you’ll be able to find a few with a quick Google.

A few of the top ones we recommend are Free Logo Design, Tailor Brands and Logo Makr. All of which are easy to use and Tailor Brands can even generate a logo for you based on a few questions. But remember to keep the logo rules we talked about earlier in mind.

Hire a Designer

A pricier option that can have better results is to hire a graphic designer to create a logo for your business. This cost can range wildly depending on the designer you choose, but you can find freelance designers who will be able to create a logo to fit your budget on sites like Fiverr and People Per Hour.

Choosing this route means you’ll be able to speak with the designer about your business and your requirements as well as any ideas you have. Once briefed they’ll be able to create you a logo within a few days or so for you to approve.

All of these options are a great way to create a logo for your online shop and the route you choose will depend on how comfortable you are with design, tools like Adobe Illustrator and the time you’ll need to spend on creating your own logo.
