It’s almost time to wave goodbye to support for Magento 1 software which was originally released in 2008. It’s been almost two years since panic emerged from false reports of Magento 1 support departing despite users never receiving their promised 18 months notice. In 2018 an extension was announced of the support for a further two years and after 55 months, it will finally be coming to an end on June 30th, 2020.
Thankfully thousands of merchants have had plenty of time to migrate themselves to Magento 2 and get settled, for those who have transitioned it is said to be the best solution to grow their businesses successfully and thrive in digital commerce. If you are yet to migrate there are plenty of reasons to do so aside from its pending mortality. Magento 2 also offers a larger base of built-in features than Magento 1, and infrastructure that is easier to maintain and support. Magento is encouraging users not yet using Magento 2 to work with their solution partner, technology vendors, and our resource library to help in the process and contact their Magento Customer Success Manager in the event that they need their store up and running in two weeks.
You’ll still be able to use Magento 1 after June 30th but you will have increased responsibility for maintaining your site’s security and PCI DSS compliance. After the support end date, Adobe will not be responding to any further security issues for Magento 1 and all Magento 1 extensions will be removed from the Magento Marketplace on July 7th and so, users should download any they wish to have before this date.
