Robot deliveries are a sign of rapidly changing times

Delivery robots are here. They were trialled, they worked, and now they’re in use. On the streets of Milton Keynes delivering food for now, and around the country carrying a whole range of goods in the not too distant future.

You may have seen them, they’re little six-wheeled buggies which arrive at your door bearing your recent purchases. Some people have described them as science fiction, the company running them, Starship Technologies, has a pretty cool name too. But they’re now reality, and it’s exciting. They’ll be carrying your goods to your customers before you know it.

Beyond the technological fix to a complex problem of how to make the last mile of the delivery process more efficient, this highlights what kind of world we are living in right now: one where change is rapid and constant.

There are many ways in which the coronavirus pandemic has been devastating, but if we are to search out the good that can come from challenging times, the advancement of technology has been one.

Many businesses resist change. There are some, ranging from centuries-old to much more recent, that do things the way they do things because that’s the way they’ve always been done.

Take remote working, virtual meetings, and all the things that are suddenly popular throughout the UK and beyond. Most of this technology has been widely available for years, but companies didn’t want to adopt them, simply because change is difficult.

Those same organisations were soon on the back foot, being overtaken by much more agile competitors who had already evolved, adopting ideas such as online shopping and flexible working. They were ready to go when the lockdown began, and already in the mindset to respond quickly to the new demands and challenges created by the pandemic.

Change shouldn’t be scary, it should be exciting. It opens up new possibilities, new ways to do business, new ways to connect to customers, new routes to success.

What you can do

Embrace change

If you’re a smaller business, you’re in a great position. Change, evolution, advancements, they’re all easier when there are fewer working parts to consider. What’s really important is the mindset that embraces change. Think of the businesses that thought they didn’t need ecommerce, and how they’re fairing right now. Think of the businesses that already used video technology to host meetings, and how smooth their transition has been. Don’t shy away from new ideas and new technology, it’ll be standard practice soon enough, and you don’t want to be the one left behind the competition.
